Why use 3D body scanning instead of traditional measurement tools?

Without a 3D body scanner, collecting a complete set of anthropometric and body composition measurements requires multiple separate tools and trained operators. 3D body scanning consolidates all of these measurements into a single, fast, and highly repeatable workflow.

Traditional Measurement Approach vs. 3D Scanning

Section titled “Traditional Measurement Approach vs. 3D Scanning”
Traditional Approach 3D Body Scanning
Scale (body weight) Single scan captures all data
Stadiometer (height) Completed in under one minute
Tape measure (circumferences) No specialized technique required per measurement
BIA device (body composition) Consistent, operator-independent results
  • Tape measure variability — Even the same person taking the same measurement may see differences of 0.5–9 cm between attempts.
  • Time and training — Using multiple devices requires training on each tool and adds time to the assessment session.
  • Testing conditions — Some devices (e.g., BIA) require strict conditions such as hydration status and fasting, which can affect accuracy.

Why Collecting Both Anthropometric and Body Composition Data Matters

Section titled “Why Collecting Both Anthropometric and Body Composition Data Matters”

Together, these measurements provide a more complete health picture and can be used to:

  • Assess risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers
  • Evaluate human performance indicators including aerobic capacity, strength, and power
  • Track changes in body composition and shape over time
  • 3D optical imaging is currently the only single-device technology that captures both anthropometric and body composition measurements simultaneously.
  • Results are operator-independent, reducing the skill variability that affects tape measure and skinfold-based methods.

If this resolves your issue, no further action is needed.

If the problem persists, contact support and include: a description of which measurements appear inconsistent and the assessment method being compared.
