Why should I collect both body composition and body shape measurements?
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Many practitioners focus primarily on tissue-level body composition metrics (fat mass, lean mass, bone mass) and overlook whole-body shape and size data. A complete assessment benefits from measuring both.
Details
Section titled “Details”Body composition analysis exists on five levels (see What is body composition?). In practice, two levels are most relevant to client assessments:
| Level | What it measures | Example metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Level 4 – Tissue | What the body is made of | Lean mass, fat mass, bone mass |
| Level 5 – Whole Body | Size, shape, and physical characteristics | Circumferences, segment lengths, body surface area, body volume |
Collecting data from both levels gives you a more complete picture of a client’s health and progress than either level alone.
Why Level 5 matters
Section titled “Why Level 5 matters”- Circumferences and body shape can change meaningfully — for example, waist circumference decreasing — even when scale weight stays the same.
- Whole-body shape metrics help clients see and understand their progress visually.
- Body surface area and volume provide context that tissue-level data alone cannot.
Selecting the right equipment
Section titled “Selecting the right equipment”When choosing assessment tools, look for devices that can provide metrics across both levels in a single session:
- Lean mass, fat mass, bone mass (Level 4)
- Circumferences, segment lengths, body surface area, body volume (Level 5)
Styku 3D body scanning automatically captures a comprehensive set of Level 5 whole-body measurements. Combined with a compatible body composition device (such as a DEXA, BIA scale, or hydrostatic system), practitioners can deliver a full multi-level assessment.
